Chiene + Tait is an independent Scottish based accountancy firm with a dedicated Charities group. We provide audit, tax and accountancy services and technical and regulatory guidance in an increasingly regulated and legislated environment.
Our specialist Charities group delivers accountancy support for third-sector organisations across the country. The group brings together Audit, Tax, VAT and Business Support teams, meaning that we offer flexibility in service delivery for our charity clients, keeping them informed of developments relevant to them and the issues they face.
We tailor our services to each client based on a thorough understanding of the client’s organisation and in depth technical expertise. So, as well as the technical advice and services you would expect from any high-quality accountancy firm, we provide assistance in more niche areas such as addressing specialised VAT queries, offering an outsourced payroll function and providing independent examination services to small charities.
Our experience and knowledge gives us critical insight into the issues that different charities have. Recently we have helped clients in the cultural sector apply for creative tax reliefs, advised local charities on the VAT position of their new buildings, provided bookkeeping cover, and plenty more – this is in addition to our audit and accounting services. We also advise on governance and regulatory requirements, particularly in relation to compliance with Financial Reporting Standards and their impact on statutory annual accounts.

We publish a regular technical update full of charity specific guidance for our clients; we also post shorter guidance, commentary and news items on our website on current issues facing the charity sector.
We host charity-specific seminars on a regular basis covering upcoming technical, regulatory and planning topics – most recently, for instance, we looked at fraud risk, OSCR reporting regulations, and fundraising through social investment.
Trustee and governance support
We provide training and administrative services to trustees, helping them to meet their legal duties in administering assets and finances with ease, and reporting in the correct manner. Additionally, we support clients on governance, and strategic issues including business planning, risk management and future needs.
